arian had been surprisingly lenient when it came to his time at the gym. he acknowledged that marcel had other duties (more important duties, though you wouldn't catch him saying that out loud) and gave him shifts to match. this only made him look all the more worse when he couldn't show up on time for the occasions when he was needed.

yesterday had been busy. infuriatingly so. he'd unknowingly stayed up for far longer than he'd intended trying to break his way into files. that encryption looked like it was going to be the death of him. he wakes up half an hour late, but manages to get ready in another half of that time.

his hair was exactly the same as it'd been when he woke up. he'd slick it back and cover up the roots once he changed at the gym. thank arceus there were spare suits there.

a girl in his way suddenly halts him in his tracks. the cars driving alongside the pavement stop him from going around her. marcel bounces impatiently on the balls of his feet.

the gym is around here... somewhere. rhian looks around her and then down at the map that roto loto is showing her. could the gps be malfunctioning? according to the map, the gym was in the street she'd just crossed from, but while she walked passed all she saw was a casino. she frowns.

"are you sure this is the right place, roto loto?"

in her confusion, rhian doesn't notice she'd stopped right before another busybody (or, as she preferred to say, busybee) passerby. "oh! i'm so sorry," she begins, startled out of her focus on the digital map. rhian looks up, her expression full of apologies and worry, and almost manages to step out of his way, but her eyes are too quick and her legs betray her.

to say her legs aren't moving would be inaccurate. they are moving, just not in any way either her or the man would have wanted them to. trembling knees are the discounted deal they get instead.

"y-you— what are you doing here?" she demands.

lilycove was supposed to be safe. it's the league's new headquarters. no rocket would be foolish enough to come here and cause trouble with so many league officials around. yet the face and the dyed hair and everything down to the voice make her relive those seconds right before he and his younger criminal friend caused havoc in new mauville.

[attr="class","thread"]it takes him a moment because, in his defense, he has more important things on his mind right now. like the shift he's still late for. enough time had passed for her face to be one buried deeper in his memory and marcel's first thought that was she'd mistaken him for someone else.

but then it hits, and his expression shifts in time with hers. except his have scrunched up into a look of impatience. what a nuisance. he instinctively opens his mouth to begin the typical dialogue, the no i'm not a member of team rocket, i work at the gym excuses, but he remembers his appearance and makes a sound of annoyance.

he should have done his hair at home.
[break][break]
there wasn't much direct contact with the citizens when he worked, nothing that would have meant he would had to worry about recognition, anyway. most of them were knocked out before they could get a proper look at him, or he'd disappear as soon as he was noticed. of course he had to run into one of the few exceptions.

"look, just here me out," he answers, schooling his features show some remorse, "i've given up the team rocket gig, alright? i know it sounds like a lie but, well, things happened. i'm not exactly a welcome face anymore."

as he talks his pokemon melts into the girl's shadow, ready to act if she tries to run; discreet enough to make noticing their movements difficult, he's trained them for this after all.

rhian is reluctant

to give the man a chance to explain himself. she's pretty sure he'd just try to buy time and run away. with how naïve the young girl is, however, he'd find it easy to fool her. correction: he already found it easy to fool her. it's really only the last part, the part about being unwelcome back in his original faction, that gets her.

her body relaxes a little. the tension lowers down, though it never goes completely away.

"how comes?" she says, frowning. had he done something bad? then again, doing something bad in team rocket probably counted as something good, so in reality he'd have to have done something good? "why would you not be welcome there anymore?"

she's willing to listen, but she wouldn't be letting him go on to wherever his appointment could be until he explained himself properly.
